Abstract: The article is a critical commentary on the higher education reform carried out in Poland in 2019. Its polemical thrust is directed at the elitist approach to university education stipulated by the reform. The author argues that this goal will not be achieved, and the real result of the reform will be: the creation of an education system that makes it difficult for the working class to access higher education institutions, the marketisation of universities and the deepening isolation of the university from social life.

We live in a unique society where despite breathing the same air and maybe stepping on the same ground, human beings have, over time, grouped themselves in social classes basing on quite a number of factors. In contemporary society, social discrimination is just part of the many forms of society discrimination that sadly we have to cope with ranging all the way from gender discrimination to racial discrimination and social class prejudice. Social class discrimination can be attributed to the differences in wealth, title and location that one comes from and it tends to group people into three broad classes; high class, middle class and low class. A general description of social class description is that it is a prejudice basing on social class in terms of attitudes, systems of policies in the society and other practices that are meant to benefit the high class at the expense of the low class. The three classes are always in conflict even though the most common of them all is the discrimination jeered towards the low class from the high class; all depending on wealth. This form of discrimination exist everywhere in schools, churches, on the streets, at theatres, playgrounds, shopping malls and other places where more than one person can meet and interact with another.

A brief look into La Española's mid sixteenth-century Italian sugar entrepreneur Juan Soderin's properties (including his household slaves), financial situation, business activities, attitudes towards relatives, religious beliefs and social circle or network, as reflected on his last will and an inventory of his assets shortly before his passing away in 1556. Based on previously unpublished documents from Archivo General de Indias of Seville. Full transcription by the author of both documents included as appendix.

The article suggests that a dance field emerged i the early 20th century with 3 subfields, folk dance, theatre dance and ball room dance. These fields are compared to the total dance activity in the country, and a pioneer representing each of the fields is portrayed in term of social class and ideological standing. They are Hulda Garborg, Gyda Christensen and Hjalmar Svaae. Examples from other Nordic countries are also brought in. Egil Bakka followed up this pilot study with another article; "Class dimensions of dance spaces: situating central agents across countries and categories"

This paper aims to advance debates in youth studies about the contemporary relevance of social structures of class, race and gender to the formation of youth subcultures. I demonstrate how drawing on a cultural class analysis and education literature on learner identities and performativity can be productive in theorising the continued significance of class, and indeed also race and gender in young people's lives. In examining school-based friendships and (sub)cultural forms through empirical research in urban schools, I argue that not only are young people's subcultural groups structured by class, race and gender but also they are integral to the production of these identities. By examining the discursive productions of two school-based subcultures as examples: the ‘Smokers’ and the ‘Football’ crowd, I further argue that these identity positions embody resources or capitals which have differing value in the context of the urban school and thus demonstrate how race, class and gender privilege are maintained and reproduced through youth subculture.

This research proposes to show how the class distinction in Victorian Age takes place in Elizabeth Gaskell's novel " Mary Barton ". First of all, it's aimed to analyze how was the social and economic events emerged through the industrialization in England. It's observed that the novel reflects both upper class and working-class people's social life. Much of the working-class population were living in poverty and they tried to announce their voice with the Chartist Movement. Then, to indicate the effects of the values and norms, ethics, class and gender relations which observed

This study investigates how age, gender, social class and dialect influence how frequently speakers of British English use intensifiers (e.g. 'very') in private conversations and whether this has changed over the last two decades. With data drawn from over 600 speakers and 4 M. words included in the British National Corpus 1994 and 2014, it is the most comprehensive study of intensifier usage to date, taking into account 111 intensifier variants. Results show that, in most age groups and social classes, men use intensifiers less frequently than women, and gender differences have diminished to a very limited extent, notably for the middle class. Moreover, intensification rate has increased across the board over time. This could be due to a shift towards a stereotypically more feminine communicative style as the perception of gender roles has changed, a process by which the middle class might have been particularly affected.

The task of studying the impact of social class on physical and mental health involves, among other things, the use of a conceptual toolbox that defines what social class is, establishes how to measure it, and sets criteria that help distinguish it from closely related concepts. One field that has recently witnessed a wealth of theoretical and conceptual research on social class is psychology, but geographers' and sociologists' attitude of diffidence toward this " positivistic " discipline has prevented them from taking advantage of this body of scholarship. This paper aims to highlight some of the most important developments in the psychological study of social class and social mobility that speak to the long-standing concerns of health geographers and sociologists with how social position, perceptions, social comparisons, and class-based identities impact health and well-being.

A magyar társadalom osztályszerkezete csepp a kapitalista világrendszer tengerében. Egyetlen apró alkotóelemként sűrítve foglalja magába az egész valamennyi feszítő ellentmondását. A könyv célja, hogy közelebb vigyen a változáshoz. A félperifériás magyar társadalom osztályszerkezetének feltérképezésével átalakításának ügyét kívánja előremozdítani.

John White’s new interdisciplinary study of private schools in Britain asks if there are good reasons for their continued existence. Drawing on philosophical, historical and recent policy data, it questions well-known objections to them. Its central concern is the danger they pose to a democratic society: their traditional dominion over leadership positions in sphere after sphere still continues. In recent years they have benefited from a deliberate blurring of the divide between the concepts of private and public education – most notably via the academies programme in England. Their growing strength has to be seen against the wider background of a single hierarchical system. Private schools and top state schools are at the apex of a new pyramid created by examination-focused curricula, league tables and parent choice. The book ends with proposals for abolishing private schools or curbing their power.

Drawing on social histories of rumour, this article challenges notions of white and Afrikaner homogeneity which persist in the scholarship on late and post-apartheid South Africa. In so doing, it demonstrates the revisionist potential of rumour as a historical source, while reinserting class in a scholarship which privileges race as salient historical feature. The article focuses on Arrie Paulus, apartheid South Africa’s most prominent white trade unionist, infamous as the personification of working-class racism. Yet this defender of race-based privilege and staunch Afrikaner nationalist was haunted by a rumour: Paulus, it was
whispered, was not actually white. The rumour circulated in reform-era South Africa and persists in the post-apartheid present. By examining the rumour surrounding Paulus’s racial and ethnic origins in terms of the functions it fulfilled within the particular contexts in which it appeared, this article exposes longstanding tensions around the politics of class characterizing Afrikaner society since the 1970s.

The family in Qatar plays a significant role in shaping its members’ lives, passing down the dominant culture with its history, traditions, values, customs, and social order to subsequent generations. Through the institution of marriage, individuals have been choosing their partners based on criteria passed down to them by their families. They have also been preserving and reproducing the culture, traditions, values, and customs invested in them by their own families by reinvesting them into their own children. By relying on a mixed method approach, the author investigates the role of the family and marriage institutions in the sustenance and stimulation of the reproduction of social stratification in Qatari society. This article is the first of its kind to address the phenomenon of reproduction of social stratification in an Arab state of the Persian Gulf.

Engels' Origin "Withering is progression under special circumstances" In Engels' work origin of the Family, Private Property and State, he points out on two distinct epochs in the evolution of mankind, the two are Savagery, Barbarism and Civilization, and for now we will focus on the first two as it is important to understand these epochs. The two epochs are separated into three distinct stages which are the lower stage, middle stage, and upper stage. Each stage refers to different period in the development of mankind and society along with it the discovery of many things including the discovery of fire, agriculture, and iron.

In this introductory essay to our special issue on elites, we outline some of the major challenges to research in this area and propose a series of theoretical and methodological pathways to address them. Theoretically we make four recommendations: (a) greater attentiveness to and specificity about the relationship between elites and power; (b) a clearer articulation of the relationships between elites and the varieties of capitalism; (c) far more attention to diversity within elites and the use of elites to understand forms of domination like white supremacy and masculine domination and (d) expanding beyond the orthodox form of Bourdieusian theoretical frameworks. Methodologically we outline how research using survey instruments, social network analysis (SNA) (and multiple correspondence analysis), interviews, ethnographic observation, experiments, archival research, administrative data and content analysis can each be deployed, built upon or redirected to help bring elites into greater focus.

Inequality refers to the phenomenon of unequal and/or unjust distribution of resources and opportunities among members of a given society. The term inequality may mean different things to different people and in different contexts. Moreover, inequality encompasses distinct yet overlapping economic, social, and spatial dimensions. Debates about inequality are further complicated by the disjuncture between the moral ethics of equity and social justice, on the one hand, and the normative idea of “deservingness,” on the other hand. In recent years, there has been increasing awareness of inequalities that are observable within social groups, in addition to those across social groups. This awareness has led to an increasing realization that inequality is systemic and entrenched in various socio-economic and political structures. Geographers' contributions toward the topic of inequality in this regard include highlighting the persistence of unequal and differentiated rights, interrogating global and extreme inequality, and analyzing the manifestations and causes of urban inequalities.
